"Where There is Will There is a Way"- DIPA KARMAKAR
By qualifying in OLYMPICS 2016 Dipa Karmakar proved that one can achieve anything- possible or impossible- if one has clarity in his/her vision and complete devotion towards his/her dreams.
The 22 year old Dipa inked her name with the golden ink in India's history by becoming the first Indian woman gymnast to qualify for Rio Olympics till date.
Becoming the first Indian female gymnast to qualify for the quadrennial events is not an achievement taken lightly and when you perform against all odds the success taste much sweeter.
If there is one word that stands out for Dipa Karmakar it is "PLIABLE" !
Dipa Karmakar (born 9 august 1993) is an Indian artistic gymnast from the North Eastern zone state Tripura, Agartala. Karmakar found her entry in gymnastics fraught with difficulties. She wae born with flat feet , considered extremely disadvantageous for a budding gymnast and she was trying to excel in a sports which many Indian had not even heard of and those who know felt it as a circus in India. She represent India at the international circuit. She rose to recognization when she won a bronze medal at the Commonwealth games 2014 held at Glasgow and a fourth place to finish at Asian games 2015 becoming the first Indian gymnast to do so in the history of games. Many a times it become difficult for her to to get her Dreams, but Karmakar never let her difficulties get to her.
With a fifth place finish at World Championship 2015 Dipa had already become torch bearer of Indian gymnastics. Ironically, Karmakar is one of the few women in the world who have successfully performed a Produnova vault , considered one of the toughest vault in the gymnastic world.
In April 2016, Dipa became the first Indian female gymnast ever to secure an olympic birth . She is the first Indian female gymnast to qualify for Olympics after 52 years.
On 7 Aug 2016, she became the first Indian gymnast to enter the finals of the gymnastics in any gymnastic events. Her combined score of 18.450 vaults, which included Produnova vault placed her 8th in the overall standing enabling her to enter the finals of women's vault event.
Selection of Dipa Karmakar is a reminder that Indians can produce champions in each and every field. It should be always remembered "We can do What we Think of"!
